Elvis/Nixon
This is a fact. Now here’s a shot at the cynical political truth: every American president* in the history of forever has been desperate to seem hipper, cooler, younger, fresher and more “in touch” with the popular culture than they usually are**.  They make (ultimately lame) jokes; they misappropriate pop songs for rallies; they hold photo ops with icons.  And no photo...

Against the ninja and SO MUCH MORE!
I’m not sure I could ever do justice to the introduction that Zack from the Alamo Drafthouse gave MIAMI CONNECTION, a truly amazing piece of weird and forgotten cinematic history, last weekend at The Cinefamily. So here. Watch this: That closely approximates about 3% of the movie. The movie is truly amazing, but I can’t add anything to the conversation about it that  AICN’s...

Everything that matters is everything that's...
Intellectual pretensions are getting in the way of the silly and the basal and the hilarious psychotronic enjoyment of the masterpiece that is Everything Is Terrible’s 2EVERYTHING 2TERRIBLE 2: TOKYO DRIFT, but that the whole enterprise matters beyond those simpler things is kind of the genius of it. Follow me if you dare to care. The real battle for the keys to the culture and to our...

I hope it’s every bit as mean spirited and misanthropic as Darabont’s THE MIST. Watch now. Thoughts later.

CAGE 360! →
This is the most perfect thing I’ve ever seen. I’m so dumbfounded and gut-laugh-stricken that I can’t even bother putting together anymore sentences.  Hyperbolically, this is the best thing the internet has ever given me.  I lobe you, internets. (via @dcwilson303 on The Twitter.)

2012: The year white people take over the planet
I’m a little toasted at the moment, but I think it’s worth noting that I just spent my evening with the waste of time that is the film 2012, one of the last movies released in 2009 that I hadn’t yet seen. (Yes, I have a loving, hate-filled relationship with Netflix instant; the list of titles I SHOULD be watching always grows by at least a dozen titles anytime Netflix saps a...

31 DAYS IN A CAGE: Programming Note
There’s been some questions (mostly by me) as to how and when I’m watching these movies and how and when I’m posting here about them. The answer is simple: WHENEVER I DAMN WELL PLEASE. Which is, however fortunately or unfortunately for any of the one of you reading, hopefully often. Unfortunately, my computer display ate it last week and got sent off. I’ve been, largely...

31 DAYS IN A CAGE - Day 1: Nicolas Coppola
Well known fact: Nic Cage is a Coppola, so draw lines as you might:   PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED The Movie   It seems weird to me that, because I grew up in a house with HBO, I know this movie and I recognize this movie and, seemingly, very few other people do. Sure, it’s a straightforward little romantic comedy with some wish-fulfillment time-travel loopiness — a throwback to a...

31 DAYS IN A CAGE: Begin at the beginning.
I have a Nicolas Cage shaped hole in my heart. The first time I can remember seeing Nic Cage was on an HBO repeat of PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED. I might have been 6 years old, but I was kind of fascinated by that movie largely because I was a nerd and there was time travel and Peggy Sue at one point, if I remember correctly, invents the microwave. Nicolas Cage was a large part of watching that movie....

The coolest thing I've ever seen.
I can’t put sentences together after watching this video. I’m astounded by so much of what’s in this. Update: The YouTube comments were, surprisingly, informative, with user “BlamingTim” chiming in to tell us that the movie is Hard Ticket to Hawaii. I’m going to try and track it down (for science). More later… Update x2: IT IS DONE.

Do It Again: A threesome
If any thread actually exists between these movies it’s that they all exist in a nebulous area that somehow fulfills equal requirements in conversations of not only “movies that can’t be talked about enough” and “movies that aren’t talked about enough.” That isn’t to say that they are each equally great (they aren’t) or that they all deserve...

Do It Again: A Reasonable Guide
No one is going to read all of this. Of that much, I’m sure. But it will lay pipe for something to be (hopefully) written and (probably not) read in the future. Either way, in a grand tradition of internet navel gazing, let’s have a completely unoriginal thought and follow through on something I’ve not only been meaning to do for a while but also that I will probably never...

Charles Bronson in MANDOM
@alexriviello at CHUD has pointed us all to glory. Glory that can not be ignored: series of Japanese commercials for a cologne/deodorant called “Mandom”. That, in and of itself, is great. BUT THEY STAR CHARLES BRONSON, which immediately shoots them up into realm the coolest things ever. Every single one is great and full of Bronson-y mandomness. Behold! Thanks YouTube user...

ROBOCOP RAP
GOD DAMN, this is amazing. The rapping isn’t all great, but it’s certainly ambitious. That is, the entirety of ROBOCOP spit into verse, using actual dialog from the movie, isn’t something I’d have ever anticipated seeing, nor is it something I’d expect to enjoy. Yet, I did! Immensely.  And so, via Devin at chud.com, here we are:

New pulp acquisitions and, with them, some...
Yeah. Six bucks gets you filthy rich with pulp. The question is: where do I start? I’m pretty sure I know what I’m going to go with here, but I’m pretty excited about all six — seven, really; ME, HOOD! also has RETURN OF THE HOOD within it — of these acquisitions, if for no other reason than they’ve given me six examples of one of my favorite things: Back...

Sleazebox: LADY TERMINATOR @ Cinema Overdrive
The CINEMA OVERDRIVE guys have a very clear understanding of a very important thing: there’s a power in watching a bad movie. Which brings me to LADY TERMINATOR. At one point, a bad-ass, unstoppable force of death destroys anything and everything in the way. People get shot…nay, people get destroyed with near gleeful abandon and the male hero runs over to the female hero...

David Lynch vs. JEDI: Some Kind of World
What kind of world would we be living in now had David Lynch directed RETURN OF THE JEDI? Probably one that’s a bit weirder, a lot bit more surreal, and wholly more awesome. And this was entirely possible. DAVID LYNCH was asked, by George Lucas, to direct RETURN OF THE JEDI. Why didn’t he? Well, watch: It had to do with a headache, I think. My favorite part of that video is...

AWESOME MOVIE PRINTS
My love for Danny Miller’s CINEMA OVERDRIVE prints not withstanding, there are some amazing people out there making prints for special screenings of movies. The guys at Mondotees always have good stuff. But then you find some kid who’s making them. And they blow you away. That happened to me this morning. I mean, check this guy out. So much goodness there.  Look at some of these. ...

Memo to enterprising geeks: I get it. It can be fun to tweak and hack and make shit. But the rest of us? We’re moving forward! Out of the past! The Best JACKASS 3D News Story Ever
By way of Devin at CHUD.COM, the reason why JACKASS is still relevant: Though Par confirmed the new “Jackass” will be shot in 3D, Dickhouse Prods. declined comment about the technology the film will employ. Insiders say Dickhouse’s Jeff Tremaine, who will direct “Jackass 3,” is conducting camera tests this week to ensure that the footage will look...

GOBLIN
Seriously, undeniably, completely: GOBLIN rules very, very hard. (I’m listening to the DAWN OF THE DEAD/ZOMBI soundtrack right now!) Cinematical gives me reason to link with a nice little overview post. It’s not too in depth, but’s it a fine place to start if you read “GOBLIN” and didn’t know what it was I was talking about. Patton Oswalt + The Room = Funny
This is brilliant. I don’t suspect it will make much sense to anyone who hasn’t seen THE ROOM (one of the great, all-time bad movies), but it’s still probably good for a laugh. AND CHASE SCENE!

Internets Linkage III
BAD. ASS. SCIENCE. Someone is positing that, by 2029, we’ll have cracked immortality. We are very close to the tipping point in human longevity… we are about fifteen years away from adding more than one year of longevity per year to remaining life expectancy. Turkey Movies
Devin’s got another wonderful write-up for the Thanksgiving weekend: Ten Terriffic Turkeys. …these ten films are objectively terrible, and yet completely watchable. I can confirms six of these to indeed be immenently watchable and horrifically...

BREAKING DAWN must be a film.
I’ll see it, I swear to the vampire gods, if it’s anything like the madness in the write-up here. Because, holy carp, that’s freaking insane. Even though New Moon has made a bazillion dollars and even though the third Twilight book, Eclipse, is already filming, Summit has declined to announce the fourth and final Twilight book as a movie. There’s a good reason for...
